Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)
Space Exploration Innovation Hub Center
JAXA will showcase the engineering model of Transformable Lunar Robot (Lunar Excursion Vehicle 2 (LEV-2), nicknamed "SORA-Q", hereinafter "LEV-2"), jointly developed with TOMY Company, Ltd., Sony Group Corporation and Doshisha University, at JAXA Exhibition booth "Standing on the moon. And beyond..." at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan scheduled to open on 13th April 2025.
LEV-2 and the Lunar Excursion Vehicle (LEV-1) were mounted on the SLIM spacecraft and launched on the HII-A Flight 47 on 7th September 2023 and were deployed to the lunar surface from SLIM just prior to the landing of the main lander on January 20, 2024.
LEV-2, together with the Lunar Excursion Vehicle (LEV-1), are the first Japanese lunar surface exploration rovers, and LEV-2 is the world's first rover to conduct fully autonomous exploration of the lunar surface . LEV-2 and LEV-1 also performed synchronized and coordinated lunar surface exploration for the first time. LEV-2 is now the world's smallest and lightest lunar exploration rover.
